Usually, counselling starts with an initial meeting where we explore your reasons for wanting therapy, what your expectations are for counselling and your individual goals and needs. This initial session ensures you are ready and allows you the time to consider if counselling and the counsellor are right for you.  This first session is not a counselling session and is free of charge.

A counselling session is usually 50 minutes, on the same day and time once a week. Counselling can carry on for as long as you feel you need it, and we will review the process regularly to ensure that both you and I feel it is benefiting you.

Walking and Equine facilitated sessions may benefit from being longer. This can be discussed to suit individual needs.

You are in control. Everyone is different, so if you feel you are not ready at this time in your life or you feel counselling is not of benefit to you, then you can stop at any time. During the counselling process your needs and progress will be regularly discussed to ensure you are getting what you need and to ensure we are working towards a planned ending that is right for you. Therefore counselling is open ended, you may stop or take a break from counselling and return when the time is right or you feel you need further support.

  • Clothing & Weather.

Please ensure you dress appropriately for the weather - sessions will still go ahead in the rain if you wish, or we can make use of the dedicated indoor counselling room depending on conditions.

  • Toilets.

Be mindful that we will not have access to comfort breaks on walking session routes, however a toilet will be available before and after the session.

  •  Confidentiality

There is always the possibility during walking sessions that we may cross paths with other people, usually people walking their dogs. This doesn’t happen often and most people wish you a good day and continue to walk past, but you should bear this in mind. Things such as this will be discussed  during the initial meeting where we can decide between us how this should be managed.

What if outside sessions are not for me ?

If you decide walking, outdoor or equine sessions are not working for you,  your sessions can continue indoors in a dedicated counselling room, over the phone or online. You are in control of your counselling and what works for you.  We can work through this together.
